Today's foecast suggested rain, but it's been simply overcast all day. Quite warm still, and feeling a little humid, which is unusual for these parts.
The abnormal rainfall during August has brought out the many fungi which abound in this area. My neighbours brought this one to my attention (clathrus rubus) - three specimens had appeared in the corner of their garden. No one had seen them here before - even the local pharmacie was unable to shed any light, apparently. This is perhaps understandable since we have very alkaline soil here, and this fungus apparently is mostly found on acid soils - I guess it may well not have occurred round here very often, if ever, before. It's certainly very striking in appearance, but the smell is disgusting!
